ALA Notable Children's Book:
Every year books are chosen for their "notable" qualities by ALA. "Notable" books are defined as "worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding (ALA, 2013a)." Books that are considered are creative that are not only within children's interest, but also encourage students to pursue their interests.

Bank Street Best Book of the Year:
Criteria for this award includes literary quality, excellent presentation, emotional impact on young readers, credibility of character, credibility of plot, authenticity of setting, age suitability, ethnic as well as religious difference handled in a positive light, and the absence of stereotypes (Bankstreet College of Education, 2012). When nonfiction titles are evaluated their criteria also includes accuracy and clarity (Bankstreet College of Education, 2012).
